AND ALL ALONE; IT'S A SORRY SIGHT
The first impression most people get upon meeting Luna Lovegood is "dotty." From the moment she set foot on the Hogwarts Express, Luna's flighty nature, tendency to speak her mind, and belief in creatures unusual even for the Wizarding community deemed her the "loony" one of the school. In her early years at Hogwarts, she was bullied for her odd behavior, but thanks to her parents' unwavering love of her, her self-esteem was solid enough that the intolerance of her classmates didn't phase her much. Instead, she seemed to show an incredible amount of understanding towards her bullies, recognizing that not everyone had been raised as curious and open-minded as she had.
That said, Luna dislikes people who are actively closed-minded and or/unkind. The presence of these traits combined by an expression of negative sentiments towards her father will tend to lead to Luna finally losing her temper. Even then, her anger is not long-lasting or violent. She merely snaps a little or responds in a steely manner before going off to let it fade, although that anger is made all the more sharp by another key trait of Luna's: Her uncanny ability to speak rather uncomfortable truths without a care for what other people may think of her for doing so. She's not one to say such truths to harm, per se, but even and especially with those she considers her friends, she's not afraid to speak her mind.
The loyalty Luna feels towards her father was exacerbated by her mother's death, but not created by it. Luna has ever been the devoted daughter, and this faithfulness has since spread to the handful of friends she has made in Hogwarts. Her belief is an unwavering thing-- whether that's belief in Harry Potter, the creatures her father talks about, or in a victory against Voldemort, it doesn't matter. She believes in most people (and the good in them,) and is willing to believe in just about anything.
The fact of Luna's unflinching belief makes what happens to her during the Second Wizarding War all the more tragic. Luna immediately following her imprisonment from the Manor is a brittler version of the girl she used to be. She is more skittish than she is flighty, eager to be able to travel and entirely incapable of staying in one room for more than an hour at a time. Her extended confinement makes the distant gaze she still walks about with less a factor of her dreaminess, and more because of her tendency to dissociate. She gets claustrophobic where she never used to be before, and finds it imperative to be out among nature at least once in order to feel even-keeled. Where once she used to be almost aggressively optimistic (albeit with more realism to her than her father had,) she's finding it difficult to believe that there can be such a thing as "normal" after the war. Coming to this odd fluctuation of time in the context of this paradigm shift has Luna still just a little uncertain if the whole situation isn't just a hallucination from her captivity, and even more unsure of how she can continue to protect the people she cares about in the face of this new world.

Family Xenophilius Lovegood (father,) Pandora Lovegood (mother, deceased) at this point in canon. In her future she has a husband (Rolf Scamander) and twin sons (Lorcan and Lysander.)
Luna is being taken from very near the end of the Second Wizard War, a time of high tension and struggle for the entire of the Wizarding community. For Luna specifically, this time is one in which Luna's mental state is at its most fragile. The only comparable event that even begins to come close to the level of trauma is the death of Pandora, which Luna witnessed. However, the difference between that event and the situation in which Luna is in at present is that it was an isolated incident. In contrast, by this point Luna has been held captive for about five months and has been exposed to physical and psychological torture for eight. Prior to being kidnapped off the Hogwarts Express while heading home for Christmas, Luna had been a key instigator in the rebellion against the Death Eaters that had taken control of Hogwarts. Her tendency to question what the "professors" were saying if it seemed incorrect/counter to what they had previous been taught got her in trouble early on, particularly with Muggle Studies "professor" Amycus Carrow.
Together with Ginny Weasley and Neville Longbottom, Luna revived Dumbledore's Army as a means of resisting the Death Eater presence in Hogwarts. Her involvement meant standing up to the Death Eaters in ways both subtle (graffiti on the walls) and far-less-so (needling the Carrows, protecting the younger students.) This in turn led to frequent
After being taken prisoner as motivation for her father Xenophilius to cease printing in support of Harry Potter, Luna was held in the cellar of Malfoy Manor. There, she had to deal with the infamous Bellatrix Lestrange. Under the (eventually unnecessary) pretense of trying to find out the location of Harry Potter, Bellatrix tortured Luna semi-frequently over the course of her imprisonment. The most physical and mentally scarring manner in which she did so was by carving the words "Blood Traitor" into both Luna's arms. When even this because less amusing to Bellatrix, she stopped her sessions with Luna. By April of 1998, Luna hadn't seen even the light of Malfoy Manor's upper floors in at least a month, and the dark had grown from something representing the great unknown to something to fear. It had become associated with that feeling of being trapped. It was a claustrophobic and solitary place, and a dark one. Luna wasn't afraid of the dark prior to her time in Malfoy Manor. It used to signify the unknown. Now, however, darkness was associated with that feeling of being trapped. There really was no place for her to go but into her own mind. However, she knew that that coping mechanism can be a dangerous one. She had witnessed her father do something similar (albeit not to the extent she had been forced to use it) after her mother's death, and was self-aware enough to know that going into her own mind and staying in was likely to drive her properly mad. In Hogwarts, she had been able to rely on her friends to help draw her out of herself after torture sessions. In Malfoy Manor, she had only Mr. Ollivander, who often required more support than he could give. Luckily for Luna, caring for Ollivander offered a grounding point outside of herself that kept her mostly present.
It's that focus on Mr. Ollivander as her grounding point that causes such problems when she first appears in 1980. She pops up still in the cellar of Malfoy Manor and Ollivander's absence has her panicking immediately. Only once she's assured of his being all right (and, more importantly, is released from the cellar,) will she manage to calm enough to be functional. Initially, a part of her will be uncertain if this whole situation isn't just a hallucination from her lengthy imprisonment, but as she adjusts and meets more from her time (and/or universe,) her tendency to be open-minded will reassert itself and let her accept what's happening. For better or worse, she will feel it absolutely necessary to get herself involved with the Order or whatever resistance force is being developed, but in reality it's more crucial that she be able to find a way to recover at least a little bit from what's happened to her. She'll only be convinced to do that for a short while, especially if the Order gets properly formed, and she'll likely only be convinced by certain people to take that time.
Merlin knows she needs it, though.

GIVE ME PAIN IF THAT'S WHAT'S REAL
Duelling: Luna has been a part of Dumbledore's Army since its inception as a Defense Against the Dark Arts course, and has done very well in it. While only a 4th year, she fought against Death Eaters with a vast number of years of experience over her at the Battle of the Department of Ministries, and again in subsequent years during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and the Battle of Hogwarts with only mild injuries overall. Although taken before the final battle, once she's regained a bit more of her health, her skills will likely still be at a similar level to what they were during the war.
Care of Magical Creatures: Luna exhibits an affinity with creatures that seems to stem from her general sense of compassion towards all beings. She has befriended the giant squid in Hogwarts lake, is kind to the Thestrals (beasts which most people shy away from) and will become a Magizoologist later in life. Throughout her career, she makes many significant discoveries of new creatures, no doubt inspired by the (some true and others far less so) tales her father told her in her youth. There is no doubt that the intentional care she shows towards other humans and magical creatures will continue even in this new setting.
Charms/Healing: Luna's mother Pandora worked on experimental spells prior to her death. Given the fact she was able to conjure a fully formed Patronus (a hare) while only in her 4th year at Hogwarts, it is likely Luna inherited some above-average skill in the area. Similarly, in the movies she is shown to have some ability with minor healing spells, such as Episkey. While she's a fair cry from an experimenter like her mother or a healer like Madame Pomfrey, Luna's abilities are still good enough in a pinch.
Creativity: Related to her abilities with Charms, Luna is an incredibly creative young woman capable of making pieces that are both appreciable as artwork and as spellwork-- She once created a roaring Lion hat for a match of Gryffindor's in her time at Hogwarts, and has paintings in her room at home of those she considers friends.
*Legilimens: While there is no canonical indication that Luna has an overt ability to practice Legilimency, she does have an almost preternatural sense of observation skills and, as stated previously, a tendency to state truths people aren't yet willing to face. She was capable of recognizing Harry Potter at Bill and Fleur's wedding despite his disguise as a Weasley cousin, and seems rather attuned to people's emotions at any given time. Though this may simply be due to her compassionate and empathetic nature (and will largely be played as such,) it's also possible that somewhere in her bloodline was an individual that was quite skilled at Legilimency, and some inkling of that has remained.

How fascinating! I never would have thought it possible to talk to so many people, all at once.
[She's certainly not used to it, at all. It had been her and Mr. Ollivander for so long.]
Tell me, does anyone know if the blood of the Acamarakus beetle was involved in creating these pens? My father used to tell me that people in the Americas would use them to communicate over large distances, before owls got popular over there.
[Speaking of which.]
Also, if there's anyone here who knows a Xenophilius Lovegood, I'd be ever-so-thankful if you could tell me. He should be living in Ottery St. Catchpole these days, if this time is anything at all like the one I know. Everything seems rather different, so perhaps that's something that's changed as well, but I'd still very much like to see him if I can.
